An anti-fascist group has called on Hackney residents to help fight the British National Party (BNP) in east London.
The rallying call came from Nick Lowles, national coordinator of Hope not Hate, at a meeting in Stoke Newington last night.
Lowles told activists that Britain faced “a far-right threat like never before”.
The BNP is currently the second largest party on Barking & Dagenham Council and the borough is a major target for the party.
According to anti-fascist magazine Searchlight, if the votes cast by Barking and Dagenham voters in the 2008 Greater London Authority elections are repeated in the upcoming local elections, the BNP would win 21 council seats placing it “neck and neck in another nine”.
The BNP already holds 12 seats on the Barking and Dagenham council and needs only another 14 to win overall control.
Party leader Nick Griffin is also standing as a parliamentary candidate in Barking and aims to unseat former Cabinet minister Margaret Hodge. Lowles said that although the BNP presence in Hackney was small, activists in the borough had a key role to play in preventing the party making gains in nearby areas.
He called on Hackney people to join campaigners gathering in Barking on April 17. Activists will deliver a special 12-page newspaper to every house in the borough.
Lowles also asked activists to make calls to voters in Barking and Dagenham to help identify those sympathetic to the anti-BNP campaign and encourage them to register to vote – a campaign method pioneered by Barack Obama.
Andrea Enisuoh, coordinator of Hackney Unites, said: “We can’t sit on our hands while the borough down the road is taken over by fascists.
“We don’t want them to get a foothold anywhere. We have to address the threat by tackling the issues that make them popular and take them on about the facts.”
Denis Lenihan, a member of Hackney Unites, said: “We can connect with voters in Barking more easily than politicians can. We face similar issues to people there as we live in a similar borough”.
Matt Collins, director of Searchlight Educational Trust, said: “While part of it is identifying people who can help, another part is persuading people that they will be voting to live under an apartheid council.”

Labour may not be the answer to the economic and social problems in the UK, but one thing for sure, the racist and fascist BNP (ex National Front) are not the solution either. To add to my comment above. My husband and sons are professionals, I am now a housewife. We are all voting for The British National Party, and so are our neighbours. Our BNP councilor Julian Leppert is second to none. He is well respected, because he is hard working, never misses a meeting or a surgery and is always on the end of the phone if you need him. No more musical chairs with others. As for the UAF, they are a violent, racist, disgusting bunch of misfits, who despise their own country. And who, in our view should be in prison along with the people who support them. What has happened to this country can never be forgiven – ever.
I live in Ilford. It used to be a lovely place to live. I went to Christchurch Junior School as a small child, and it was a lovely school. Most people did very well. When I was driving past recently, I didn’t recognize the place. It was playtime, and there was not one white face in the playground. I got out of the car and looked inside the reception area. There were two ladies wearing hijabs who were not speaking English. I thought it must have been changed to a Madrasah, as all the children appeared to be Muslim also. This for me typifies what has happened to this country. We didn’t ask for this, it happened without our consent. So how come we are called racist for not marveling at how wonderful it is? We live near Chigwell, but the area is changing daily. If a house goes up for sale, all you see is Asians walking up the path to look. If a shop becomes vacant, it is bought up by Asians. How many fruit shops and letting agents do you need? We are expecting our first two grandchildren within the next two months. What will this country look like when they are 10?

We're all allowed our own identity. As I said, I'm white, English and proud of it – and nobody arrests me for saying so – but I think the BNP are very dangerous.
You might be surprised to find I agree with you about some things!
What I'm saying is that while I might agree with certain things being a problem, I don't think the BNP is a solution – they make the situation worse.
The point is most people who dislike the BNP actually agree with you. They don't deny racism cuts both ways, and many people (including many muslims) condemn suppression of women, and people who say gays & lesbians should be executed.
Nobody says any group of people – including foreigners – won't statistically contain a few people that should be criticised. But I imagine you don't agree and get on with all white British people either, and the answer to that isn't that there's too many white British people here.
The BNP, like all political parties, hijack our concerns and pretend they're the only ones listening.

I think you missed my point, Dan. The reason I replied to that comment from "Guest" was because it said the BNP were "purporting" to represent the workers. I didn't say they had a fantastic percentage of the vote. In fact, it's gone from 2% to 4%, but going in the right direction for supporters. ____Also after the way Nick Griffin was treated on Question Time, 22% of the British public said they would consider voting for the BNP! RE: the injustice described in the video – which I referred to, so I'm not sure why you assume I don't care – simply to point to an existing problem doesn't prove that the BNP are the solution.
Nobody denies some white British people suffer injustice. And indeed, so do some immigrants, muslims and people of all kinds of different races. Why not unite with British people of all racial and religious backgrounds who suffer injustice, rather than divide people who have more in common than they have differences? Dividing us makes us less likely to achieve anything.

I think you'll find the anti-fascists are a group of people joined by a common cause – the wish to not have a racist organisation such as the BNP purporting to represent the workers. I'd suggest we have far more to gain by uniting with our fellow low paid workers, whether they be immigrants or not, than giving into the BNP's attempts to divide the workforce.
