A Halloween-themed food donation scheme for Hackney Foodbank is taking place again this year.
Launched by Jenna Fansa from The Local Buyers Club in Stoke Newington,Trick or Eat saw huge success last year with 1,200 meals collected for people in poverty.
This year, October 31 will see volunteers in each street putting collection boxes outside their homes and inviting friends and neighbours to donate non-perishable food.
More than 20 streets across the borough will be taking part this year with over 50 households and shops putting collection boxes outside.
“The need is greater than ever,” Fansa told Hackney Post. “Demand for Hackney Foodbank has more than doubled this year with the arrival of Coronavirus and the stress of simply getting enough to eat is intolerable for thousands of residents.”
Given that Halloween will feel quite different this year, Fansa said the Trick or Eat initiative offers “A chance to show some love to people in our community who are struggling.
Melanie Rochford from Hackney Foodbank said that they had fed over “10,000 mouths since the beginning of March through to the end of September.” She added that, “Without the vital support we get from our local community, we can’t do the work we do”.
“It’s great to have people in our community like Jenna to push for local effort to support those who have fallen on very hard times. Let’s hope this year’s Trick or Eat can bring that community together and support this effort once again”, she added.
The Local Buyers Club is also donating £5 to Hackney Foodbank for every new member who signs up to the Club using the code TRICKOREAT this October. To take part in Trick or Eat, email team@localbuyersclub.com.
