SUPERMARKETS in Hackney are battling to meet demand for loo roll, antibacterial and long-life wipes as shoppers race to stockpile items amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Hackney’s health authority is currently treating two confirmed cases of the virus.
Tesco’s superstore on Morning Lane has repeatedly run out of loo roll and dry pasta. One shopper, Dave, 32, said: “It’s crazy, the shelves are empty. People are panic buying for nothing. It’s no laughing matter.”
Another shopper at Tesco’s Morning Lane store told the Hackney Post: “This thing is only going to get worse. I’ve got kids to think about and I’m only buying a few extra bits each time.”
Iceland on Mare Street, however, is fully stocked with loo roll, and is advertising a £1 special offer in its display window.
Rush to Flush
Sheila, 78, a lifelong resident of Mare Street has begun stockpiling essential goods.
“I’m an old lady. What if I come back here next week and there’s no loo roll? What if I’m not even allowed to leave my house? Then what?” said Sheila.
Richard Walker, managing director of Iceland, said “We are monitoring Covid-19 closely. We have well-established contingency plans and are taking all the necessary steps to ensure that our customers continue to have the food and other supplies they need.
“We are working extremely closely with our suppliers and our supply chains remain robust overall. Even where there are supply challenges, we are thoroughly experienced in sourcing alternatives to help meet customer demand.
“We have introduced a temporary cap on sales of certain products online including some anti-bacterial soaps and wipes, to ensure our customers have access to the products they need.”
