The Hackney Empire has won an award for London’s most welcoming theatre.
Smooth Radio ran the My Theatre Matters! Most Welcoming Theatre Award 2015 competition and the public voted online for their favourite. Of more than 250 entries, the Hackney Empire was announced as the winner on 1 October.
Creative director Susie Mckenna and Deputy Chief Executive Jo Hemmant said that winning the award for London’s Most Welcoming Theatre ‘means the most’ to their team. Rather than housing obscure operas, the theatre was “quintessentially 21st Century Britain”.
The theatre makes a point of employing local people, keeping ticket prices as low as possible and making sure the programme is tailored to the community. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Rudimental or Stoke Newington School, they are part of this space and we welcome that,” Mckenna said.
