Great bin robbery blights Hackney

Bin missing

Fly-tipping has always been an issue in Hackney, but now shopkeepers on Stoke Newington Road are resorting to bin thievery to deal with the rubbish.

After Hackney Council removed a public litter bin two months ago, shop owners had to pinch another from elsewhere – which has now disappeared itself.

Shopkeepers say that bags of waste are being left in the container’s place.

“Every day they dump rubbish there two or three times a day,” said Ali Mutassar, who works at Galaxy Telecoms.

“There is a lot [of rubbish] in the evening because of all the restaurants.”

Feryal Demirci, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “People try to avoid their responsibilities by putting commercial rubbish in litter bins.

“We moved a litter bin on Stoke Newington Road because whole bags of rubbish were found in it.

“In the past two months we have done 18 inspections, issued seven statutory notices and fined six businesses on Stoke Newington Road.”
