Former Eastenders’ star Mohammed George, who played Gus Smith in the popular TV soap for five years, has started a libel action against The Sun.
The Hackney-born actor was labelled a “woman beater” by the newspaper after he was arrested in 2006 following a row with his partner Emma Archibald.
Although Mr George admitted to hitting his girlfriend with a rubbish bag which had split open and accepted a police caution for common assault, he claimed the paper accused him of “acting like a wild animal” during the incident.
Speaking on behalf of Mr George, Ronald Thwaites QC said Mr George felt that being called a “woman beater” was “one step away from being described as a paedophile”.
However, Mr Thwaites added that The Sun “stood by the truth of what they had written”.
