A woman peeling and carving up an ox tongue. A man reading erotically charged descriptions of human slaughter. An audience squeaking plastic hamburgers and turkey drumsticks. In the dark underbelly of a pub called the Slaughtered Lamb. This was Hackney at its weirdest and arguably worst – certainly for the vegetarian who accompanied me. Families from Nigeria and the Caribbean are suffering the effects of the credit crunch as cash-strapped relatives in Hackney are forced to wire less money home.

A footballer who spent a decade trying to force his way into his club’s first team has made his debut within days of turning 40.
Alan Cooley, a regular for Sporting Hackney’s second string over the past 10 years, played the second half of a key cup first-team clash.
Cooley said he was “over the moon” to take part in the side’s 7-1 quarter-final demolition of Sudbury Court.

A star-studded Tottenham Hotspur reserve side hammered Chelsea 4-0 at Brisbane Road on Monday night.
Leyton Orient hosted the Monday night clash between the two Premiership heavyweights, which saw first-team Spurs regulars including Roman Pavlyuchenko, David Bentley, Gareth Bale and Pascal Chimbonda take apart a less experienced Chelsea B side.
