Leyton Orient lose yet again and drop to the bottom of League Two

Leyton Orient have dropped to bottom of the League Two table following a 0-5 drubbing away to Accrington Stanley.

The Os now languish in 24th place and face the prospect of relegation to the National League for the first time in their history.

The home side snatched the lead in the closing stages of the first half, as striker Billy Kee guided a Sean McConville cross into the bottom corner of the Orient net.

Goal splurge

Six minutes into the second half, Accrington doubled their lead through defender Matty Pearson.

They failed to add to their tally, though, for the next half an hour as McConville and forward Shay McCartan wasted golden opportunities to put the game out of the O’s reach.

There was a goal splurge in the last seven minutes, as Accrington added three more.

McConville scored from long range in the 85th minute; then one minute later, audaciously launched the ball from halfway over flailing Orient keeper Charlie Grainger and into the net.

Pearson added the fifth in the 92nd minute to send the Os back to Brisbane Road with their 23rd league defeat of the season and just two wins in their last ten games.

Second loss in a row

Orient were also downed by Grimsby 3-0 over the weekend. Playing at home, the Os put in another lacklustre display as they were systematically picked apart by The Mariners.

The visitors took the lead through midfielder Sam Jones as he powered a header into the bottom left-hand corner of the Orient net.

Grimsby doubled their lead in the 71st minute, after the ball comically bounced into the foot of the net off full-back Callum Kennedy’s back. The third, and final, goal came three minutes from time when Scott Vernon finished off a slick passing move.

Financial problems

Orient have huge problems off the field as well. They face a winding up order at the High Court on 20 March in relation to a reported £250,000 of unpaid taxes. The club’s programme designers – Alchemy Creations – have not been paid on time; and despised owner Francesco Becchetti is looking to cut his losses and sell the club.
