News in Brief: March 7

Operation Falcon

Twenty four arrests were made last month under Operation Falcon in a major crackdown on licensing, theft and anti-social behaviour in Hackney’s night time economy areas.

Teams including Hackney Police, London Fire Brigade, the MPS drugs dog unit and Volunteer Police Cadets targeted Shoreditch and Dalston in undercover operations throughout February.

Inspector Ian Simpkins from Hackney’s licensing team said: “We remain determined to pursue and arrest perpetrators who prey on those who use the night time economy and who would steal from others, supply harmful drugs or do physical harm.”

Jail for armed robber

A man has been jailed for 11 years following a series of armed robberies and the possession of an imitation firearm.

Marlon White, 31, of St Phillips Road, raided an east London bookmakers with an object shaped like a firearm wrapped in a plastic bag on 28 February 2012

The conviction follows an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad, which targets commercial armed robberies, between 8 April and 15 September.

Detective Constable Katie Scott thanked victims for their assistance in the investigation.

Scott said: “The sentence passed sends out a clear deterrent to those considering committing similar offences.”
